What does it do?
Reduces criteria emissions
Reduces fuel consumption
Increases available power and torque
Increases engine life and service intervals
Speed of Air's patented engine technology creates a drastically more efficient combustion process which results in a number of closely related benefits. Our technology creates sufficient lean burn to significantly reduce NOx while also reducing CO and HC emissions. Because more fuel is being completely burned in the combustion chamber, fuel consumption is decreased per Brake-Specific Horse Power. Likewise, available horsepower and torque are increased per specific fuel consumption. Finally, the reduction in carbon—which resolves as soot—allows for extended oil change service intervals while prolonging wear surface life.
How Does it Work?
Speed of Air’s patented technology influences the thermo-physical boundary layers within the combustion chamber of the engine. As is the case for the golf ball, dimpling the surfaces inside the combustion chamber, coupled with our proprietary mix of coatings, creates a thinner and well attached turbulent boundary layer between the air-fuel mixture, its flame front and the combustion chamber walls. This thin, turbulent layer allows the combustion flame front to progress much closer to the cool metal walls of the combustion chamber thereby increasing overall combustion efficiency.
Compatibility with Legacy Technology
One striking benefit of Speed of Air technology is its proven applicability to a wide range of engine applications and fuel types. Speed of Air has tens of thousands of hours of independent lab testing and real-world in-field use in diesel, natural gas and gasoline engines. We have successfully demonstrated the ability to take non-compliant tier III engines and bring them into EPA Tier IV standards without the use of any additional after gas treatment. For more modern engines that utilize extensive after gas equipment, Speed of Air's technology significantly increases the life of after gas components without the need for re-gen. We have a CAT C-7 powered transit bus that has been in continuous operation since 2014 that has not gone through a DPF re-gen in over 6 years, while still producing 0.00% opacity at warm up.
How mature is Speed of Air’s Technology?
Speed of Air started R&D nearly 20 years ago with V-Twin engines. Today, there are literally hundreds of Indian motorcycle engines around the globe that have enjoyed the benefit of Speed of Air’s patented technology. Since those early beginnings, our technology has been continuously improved and adapted to larger and more complex power plants. Speed of Air technology has undergone significant independent lab testing, but more importantly, it has stood the test of time in every application it has been introduced to. From Caterpillar 3516-powered mine haul trucks, to CAT 3516TALE CNG power generation applications, to Cummins 5.9L agricultural swathers to CAT C-7 ACERT mass transit busses, Speed of Air has delivered cutting-edge performance and clear value—without a single failure--to every one of our satisfied customers. Speed of Air technology is mature and it works.
Value Proposition
The business case for Speed of Air technology is clear and it is simple.
-For businesses that have difficulty meeting emissions requirements, Speed of Air technology allows the possibility of extending fleet life without expensive after-gas modifications and/or re-power. For those operating in highly-regulated EPA non-attainment geographical areas and subject to expensive non-compliance fines, Speed of Air offers the ability to avoid those fines while ensuring unhindered and reliable production.
-Speed of Air technology reduces fuel burn which directly impacts your business’ bottom line. Fuel savings vary with engine type and use, but we have demonstrated fuel burn reductions approaching 50% in some constant speed applications.
-Extension of service intervals and engine life. In Speed of Air’s most recent CAT 3516 mine haul truck engine application, oil change intervals were nearly doubled compared to our truck’s running mate. Not including the opportunity cost of increasing the mine’s utilization rate, Speed of Air technology saved nearly $250,000 in direct operating expense over the approximately 18,000-hour service life of the engine, compared to its running mate and based solely on labor and materials for oil changes. Moreover, the tear down conditional inspection of the engine’s internal components showed main bearing life to be at about 50% with zero carbon build up on the piston crowns or ring lands. Additionally, Speed of Air technology significantly extends-or eliminates DPF re-gen intervals, further reducing maintenance costs and maintenance down time.
Regardless of whether your business is directly regulated by emissions standards, the value of making a positive impact on our environment, while enjoying the bottom-line operational savings that Speed of Air Engine Technology offers, is a priceless decision that cannot be over-stated.
